In Other News...

We seem to be back to sleeping through the night, at least for a while. I'm sure it won't last forever, but it's been really nice. He'll usually go down for the night at around midnight and sleep till 6-7 a.m., get a new diaper, nurse, and sleep again till about 9.

I've also been happy because a couple times now, he's managed to put himself to sleep. Normally our bedtime schedule is to nurse around 11 p.m. and he'll fall sleep in my lap. Once I'm sure he's really out, I put him in his bassinet and go to bed myself. The other night, I put him to bed too soon and he woke up - eyes wide open, looking around, etc. But he didn't start fussing, so I just left him there and decided to see what happened. I read for awhile, and he was still awake, but quiet, so I turned off the light. Wrong move. He immediately started crying, so I turned the light back on and he stopped. Turned out he had been watching the ceiling fan and was not pleased when I made it disappear. So I let him watch that while I kept reading. Eventually he was asleep and I could turn the light off safely.

Then two nights ago, he nursed around 10 p.m. and then was quiet, but not sleeping. I decided to move to the bedroom and put him down and just see what happened. Once again, he loved watching the fan and after awhile, I decided to try to turn the lights off again so I could get some sleep. I was fully prepared to have to turn them back on, but surprisingly, he didn't fuss at all when they went out. He just occasionally would "talk" to himself and coo a bit, then fall silent. He kept that up for about half an hour, and then fell asleep.

This makes me feel a lot better because I know we're going to have to transition him to his crib soon - he's getting too big for his bassinet. It's just sad for me to think of him being in another room. Plus, it's so much easier at night to be able to have him within arm's reach. I need to get a chair or something in his nursery so I can sit in there instead of taking him to my room and then back. We'll see - I think we still have a few weeks till we reach that point.
