We've been home for three days now and it's odd how quickly being a family of four as become the norm. Even though Tristan's not even a week old, it seems like he's been here for much longer.
I was initially going to be in the hospital through Sunday, but when my doctor came in to check on me Saturday evening and saw that I was up, dressed, and ready to go, she said she didn't see any need to keep me there longer. We ended up having to wait a little longer for Tristan to get his circumcision and then his hearing test (both of which went fine), and for Tom to run home and install the infant car seat. Ronan and I also caused a bit of excitement before then - my mom and Tom and run down to grab drinks for us as we ate dinner in my room. Ronan decided, after they left, that he wanted to go with and quickly ran out of the room and out the double doors. I was holding Tristan and there were big signs saying not to take the infants past that point. But Ronan was quickly running out of sight, so I went after him. Sure enough, the lights started flashing and the alarm went off. I managed to grab Ronan and get back to the room just as a nurse was rushing out of it and several more were coming out of the nurses' station. They were all very understanding and everything was ok, but I was embarrassed and upset. Ronan was kind of freaked out by the lights and sounds, though he told my mom and Tom that "Mommy was scared and the baby was scared, but I wasn't scared." Still, the lights remained a big topic of discussion for him for awhile.
Overall, Ronan's been doing really well with Tristan. He likes to check on him, make sure he's eating or that he has his blanket, etc. We've been keeping Ronan on his daycare schedule - we thought that he should keep his routine as much as possible, plus, it gives Tom and I a chance to get some sleep during the day and also take care of the baby. The dogs are also quite protective of Tristan. When we first brought him home, Loki quickly became the guard dog, growling and snapping at Shadow if he got too close (though Shadow hadn't done anything). Both of them keep close to him when they're inside and give me looks of concern when he starts making noise. Shadow was thoroughly confused when Tristan first got the hiccups and kept looking at me like, "Why don't you do something?"
Tristan has been a very easy baby so far. Our first night home was rough, though. He did not want to sleep in the bassinet in our room, he had trouble latching on for nursing, and would only sleep if he was being held. Tom and I spent the night trading off who would hold him while the other slept for an hour or two. Luckily, by the next night, Tristan was happy to be in the bassinet and was sleeping for 3-4 hours at a time. Last night, he ate 10 p.m., 2 a.m., and then 5:30 a.m. I feel much more rested than I remember with Ronan. I'm very grateful that Tom is able to take 4 weeks off again and that I was able to work things out with school. My mom left this morning, which was sad, but I was very very happy that she was able to be here. I can't wait for her (and my dad) to come visit again.
Other than that, not much is happening. We're just taking it very easy and enjoying this beautiful weather! Hope you're able to do the same.
