After having a nice Christmas here in Ohio, on New Year's Day we packed up and headed to Minnesota. It was a wonderful trip, especially since Tom was able to come with us for the first time in a long while. We got in around 11 a.m. on Saturday and that afternoon, both sets of my grandparents, my brother, my aunt and uncle, my cousin, his wife and their two kids, and my other cousin and her two kids all came over for a Christmas celebration. It was so much fun to see everyone. The kids did pretty well together. The biggest hit of the day was the toy helicopter that had a spinning, lighted rotor, moved around on the ground, and played a lovely, catchy, Japanese disco tune that my cousin Eric got for Ronan. The kids found no greater joy than to set that thing on the kitchen floor and try to get it to go through their legs, laughing hysterically when it did. I think my brother especially loved the music. :) Sadly, after three days of hard use, something is wrong with the wheels, so it only spins in circles now. We're hoping to fix it at some point. I'm sure the dogs would also love to play with it.
On Sunday, we had a little play date with two of my friends who each have a little girl close to Ronan's age. It was great to catch up and the kids had fun. I think Ronan enjoyed the fact that for the most part, the girls weren't really interested in the toys he wanted to play with. After that, a bunch of my parents' friends came over and we all watched the Packers get into the playoffs (woohoo!). One of their friends has a son (Max) who's also 2 and she brought him over later on. He and Ronan played great together. Ronan had a total crush on Max's mom and was flirting with her the whole time. He kept sitting on my parents' rocking chair with Max and having her rock them and sing. He'd also give Max hugs and kisses - perhaps trying to get in on the mom's good side. And of course, they both enjoyed playing with the helicopter.
Monday was a bit more serious. My grandpa slipped on ice on his driveway and had to be taken to the hospital. They initially thought it was very serious, but thankfully, it turned out ok. On Tuesday, my mom took Tom, Ronan and I out to lunch and then we went to the Como Conservatory and Zoo. That was really fun. Ronan loved running around through the different rooms and the plants there were amazing. Plus, they had some cool animal displays as well. (There will be pictures up soon on Facebook and Flickr, if you're interested.) Even though it was cold, we had fun at the zoo as well. Most of the animals were inside, so we weren't out for huge periods of time. It was a lot of fun and great to spend a day out with my mom. It's hard to be so far away!
We came back home on Wednesday. Ronan did a great job on the plane and at the airports (we had a layover in Chicago). The dogs were super excited to see us. Tom's cousin, who house/dog sat for us, said that they had been sleeping with Ronan's toys the whole time we were gone. Unfortunately, Ronan got a really bad fever Wednesday evening and that's continued today. I took him to the doctor this morning and got an antibiotic so hopefully that'll help. Meanwhile, we've been giving him regular doses of Tylenol and Motrin (well, the generic versions) and that's helped him stay active and good natured.
School starts Monday, so I'm frantically trying to finish reading the Harry Potter books. I'm nearly done with the 5th one (Order of the Phoenix) and I hope I can finish the rest before Monday. I really wish I could read my school books as quickly as I can read these! But I suppose having to think and take notes slows me down. Oh well.
