Tristan had his appointment on Monday. Overall, things are looking good. He's 18 lbs, 8 oz, which keeps him in the 97th percentile for weight. He's 26 inches, which is the 85th percentile for length, and his head circumference is 17 inches (76%). So he's a big, healthy, happy baby. :) He also got a series of shots, which he was not happy about. Ronan was never a fan either, but he usually cried for about a minute and then calmed down. Not the case with Tristan. He made sure everyone in the office knew how he felt. I tried to nurse him to help him feel better - no go. He wasn't about to be pacified. He didn't stop crying (screaming, really) until we got in the car and out of the parking deck. But once we got moving, he quieted down and was fine.
I'm also trying to plan out daycare stuff for him. He'll start at the beginning of September, when I start school again. He and Ronan will both be there three days a week. I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time with this. Ronan loves daycare and I'm glad he's there. I know it's good for him. But for some reason, I just feel like it's too soon for Tristan (he'll be 5 months by that point; I started Ronan at 7 months). I also feel guilty that he's going to be there for close to 8 hours a day. Even though I'm only in the classroom/office hours for about 4 hours a day twice a week, I need the extra time to do research, grading, writing, etc. I think that's just one of the things with academia. You technically have all this free time, but in reality, it's eaten up by the sheer volume of work between teaching and research. I know it'll all work out and it'll be ok, but it will be a transition. Hopefully we can at least avoid some of the germs that go through there. I'm hoping that since Tristan's been exposed to Ronan and all the stuff he's exposed to at daycare, his immune system might be a little stronger than Ronan's was when he started.
In other news, I recently was awarded a grant to do research at the University of Minnesota's Immigration History Research Center. I'm looking forward to getting up there (next month) - they house the papers of one of the main Arab Americans who I'm studying and hopefully I can get some background information on some of the organizations I'm looking at. I'll also be going out to California in August to visit a private archive of another prominent individual. That trip has been a bit of a pain to schedule, but I finally worked it out. I'll be leaving both Tristan and Ronan here though, so it might be a bit rough. It'll be the first time I've been away from Tristan. It's a short trip though, Monday-Wednesday. Then I'll head up to MN with both boys (thanks to my mom for volunteering to watch them while I research!), get back, and then start teaching the next day. So August is going to be pretty hectic, but hopefully it'll help me get a lot farther on my research. If I disappear soon, you'll know why!
