Assortment of thoughts

Tristan's coming up on the four month mark, and unfortunately, all the crazy sleep-related stuff that comes with it.  I was just finally beginning to enjoy 5-6 hours of sleep at a time and now he's back to waking up several times at night and having trouble going down to begin with.  I'm beginning to wonder if he's starting to teethe as well.  But at least this time around, I can keep reminding myself that this too will pass and actually have the experience to believe it.  Still, it's frustrating to listen to him cry and fuss and not be able to make a difference.

Other than that, though, things are going well.  Overall, Tristan's still a pretty happy and laid-back baby, for which I'm very grateful.  Ronan still loves being a big brother, another giant plus.  When Tristan starts crying, Ronan rushes over to sing to him or tell him, "It's ok baby." He also likes to tell me, "My brother's crying."

Like almost everywhere else in the country, it's been really hot here lately.  Tom and I bought a hard plastic pool for Ronan and that's been a huge hit.  Getting it to our house was an adventure though.  We had to tie it to the top of Tom's Jeep and then drive back, on the freeway.  We could hear the thing thumping along the roof, which was good, because that meant it was still attached.  It got scary when it would stop thumping for a couple minutes.  I was sure that it was going to fly off and cause a major accident.  Thankfully, we made it home safely and we'll never have to do that again!  Ronan continues to search for, and find, toads in our yard and now he puts them in his pool so they can go swimming too.  I try to make sure he understands that the toads can't stay in there forever and he has to let them rest from time to time.  So far, we haven't had any drowned toads.  On the downside though, we did have a cat show up in our yard not long after Ronan had put one of his toads back in the bushes.  When we tried to scare it off, it had a big mouthful of something, so I think that particular toad met his end there.  Luckily, Ronan didn't seem to realize that.

We didn't do anything exciting for the 4th of July.  I took the boys over to one of Tom's aunt and uncle's house for their annual cookout, which was fun.  Ronan loved it because they have a horse, a cat, chickens, and dogs, so that was pretty much the equivalent of paradise for him.  Then last weekend, our township had its annual "Rock the Docks" festival at the lake, so I took Ronan there.  We didn't do any of the rides, but there was an animal show, which he really liked.  He got to see and pet a bunch of different animals, including a turtle, rabbit, chinchilla, lizard, snakes, and an alligator, among other things.  The alligator was a big hit and he talked about it for a long time.

But that's pretty much all that's been happening here.  Not too much in the realm of excitement, but I'm looking forward to next week when my parents and brother are coming to visit and we'll have Tristan's baptism.  Then August will be busy, with research trips for me to both California and Minnesota and then the semester begins at the end of the month.  I suppose I should start writing lectures...
