So I have a big trip coming up next week - I'm heading out to California to visit a private archive that's key for my research. It's a very short trip - Mon-Wed (with both Monday and Wednesday being almost all travel), but it's causing quite a bit of stress for me. The main problem is getting Tristan to take a bottle. I realize I probably should have been starting this a lot earlier, but oh well. We've tried a number of bottles, and found one that's been somewhat successful. I've been able to get Tristan to drink about half an ounce at a time, but he hasn't been cooperating with Tom at all. So that's been rough. I'm hopeful that since Tristan has drunk at least a little out of a bottle, it'll work out once I'm gone (as opposed to never drinking out of it). Bringing him with me really isn't an option - I only have Tuesday to work, so I can't risk losing time if Tristan isn't being cooperative.
To help fight some of the stress and worry, I've started thinking about things I'll enjoy with this trip. I'm writing them down to continue to help feel better.
1. Not having to juggle a stroller and child(ren) through security
2. Not having to negotiate two kids, the stroller, and all carry-on baggage when using the airport bathrooms.
3. The chance to sleep completely through the night (twice!) - who knows if I'll wake up anyway though out of habit.
4. Having my body to myself - no climbing, hair-pulling, carrying, etc.
5. Getting in a work zone and being able to stay in it.
6. Not being responsible for cooking, cleaning, running errands
7. Being able to read a magazine, books, whatever I want, while waiting for my flight, rather than trying to entertain a bored three year old.
Don't get me wrong, of course I'll miss my boys, but there are definitely some pluses to going on my own. And the biggest part of course is that this will hopefully turn up some much needed information for my dissertation.
