School's out for the summer

At least almost - I sat in my last class as a student on Tuesday night, turned in my last assignment and now just have to grade a stack of finals and I'm done. Hooray! I've enjoyed being a student, for many many years, and it's a little weird to think that part of my career is over, but I'm really looking forward to being on the other side of the desk. Assuming I pass comps in August, I'll start teaching my own class this fall. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm also looking forward to dissertation work, and especially my big trip to Israel this summer! I'll be doing research there, but also plan to get some sight-seeing in as well! It is a little scary to leave Ronan though, even if it is only a week. Thankfully, Tom will be taking vacation, so the two of them will be able to spend some quality time together. Plus, I'm keeping Ronan in daycare twice a week, so that should help him keep some stability in his schedule. Overall, I'm sure they'll do fine - I'll probably be the bigger wreck!

Ronan's doing very well. He has a great time at daycare, which I'm happy about. It makes it so much easier, knowing he loves it there. He has some friends, including one little boy who usually comes running over when I drop Ronan off, says "Hi Ronan" and then tries to take his hand and take him over to whatever play area he's currently at. (They have four "sections" in their room for different activities like gross motor, fine motor, art, and I think it's something like "life" - toy kitchens and stuff like that.) And if, like today, I let Ronan wear one of his Thomas the Tank Engine shirts, he is the king of room - the kids swarm to touch his shirt. (Kind of reminds me of the Bible stories where the crowds try to touch Jesus' robes - not that I'm equating Ronan (or Thomas the Tank Engine) with Jesus!)

On Saturday, I decided to take Ronan to the zoo and invited my mother-in-law to come with us. She was watching my niece and nephew that day, so the five us went and had a good time. It was the first non-rainy day we'd had in well over a week and I think everyone in the Akron area had the same idea as me. The place was packed and the ticket line stretched out the door. But we still had a fun time. Afterward, we got the kids some food and ate at the lake by our house and let the kids play on the playground. Unfortunately, by that point, the clouds had returned, so it got chilly, but the kids didn't seem to mind at all. Ronan had a lot of fun with his older cousin and kept wanting to do everything he did. When we had to leave, Ronan just kept saying his name over and over.

Hmm, it seems though that my little boy is getting ready for another transition - as I was writing this, he climbed out of his crib! Guess we'll have to start seriously considering moving him into our current guest room and a big boy bed. Not sure I'm ready for that!

Well, I should get going. I'll try to be better about updating now that classes are done. But I also have to read a little less than 200 books by Aug. 1, so it's not quite the carefree summer I'd like. :)
