We were supposed to have this last week, but with the ear infection and general sickness, it got postponed. We went in yesterday (Friday) and overall, it went well. Ronan was happy as could be while we waited in the room for the doctor to show up. He had no desire to sit on the table, so I let him walk around. He decided to carry his shoes with him the whole time and had fun looking out the window. Just as the doctor came in, he sat down on the floor and as soon as he recognized the doctor, his whole demeanor changed. He became very wary and didn't want me to let go of him. The doctor laughed and said, "I don't blame you man - you've got it right, I'm not to be trusted." As soon as the actual exam started, Ronan began crying. He didn't want to lay down and he definitely did not want me to hold his arms down while the doctor look in his ears and mouth. On the plus side, there wasn't much of a change when it came to his shots. Still, I felt bad for him. He cheered up as soon as I held him again and was smiling when the doctor left.
As far as his stats, everything looks good. He's 30.5 inches long (75th percentile) and 19lbs, 5 oz (6th percentile), so he's still long and lean. The doctor didn't seem too worried about his weight. He also told me that it's perfectly normal at this age for kids to stop eating as much as they used to and that we have two options: try to force him to eat or respect his ability to know what he needs. Trying the first one, he said, is a surefire way to make sure that no one is happy and also create all sorts of eating issues later in life. Obviously, we're going with option two here. :)
Speaking of food, we've been branching out a bit more now, which is fun. He's still eating some baby food, but we continue to share our dinners with him. We've also started giving him whole milk, which he seems to like. The main problem we have is that he hasn't figured out yet that at some point, you have to tip the cup back in order to get the liquid out. If I try to help him, he just lets go and has me do it for him - it's like feeding a baby animal. But he does love to carry his cup around and try to drink from it himself.
He's also been having fun sharing food with Loki, something Loki also enjoys. Today we were sitting on the floor eating goldfish and Ronan would grab a few for himself and then feed one to Loki. Poor Shadow was left out of this for some reason (I gave him a few so he didn't feel completely alone).
Finally, Ronan's also trying to jump. It's so cute - I forget why, but I jumped in front of him and he immediately started bending his knees like he was going to do the same, but just couldn't quite figure out what was supposed to come next. Then I would laugh and he would smile and clap his hands. I'm definitely enjoying this age.
But I should be getting back to work. Ah, the life of a grad student.
