Stupid State Requirements

So last night I found a job posting on Craigslist for teachers at various charter schools in the Cleveland/Youngstown areas. Since it didn't mention anything about being licensed (and I had heard rumors that private schools don't always require licensed and hoped the same applied to charters), I sent in an application. They called me back by this afternoon, which was amazing. Sadly, though, licenses are required after all.

I knew it was kind of a long shot (or at least, if I'd been honest with myself, I would've known that), but I was really hoping that having a Masters degree would bring some kind of benefit. I immediately went online to look at getting licensed, and while Ohio does have an accelerated/limited license program (in an attempted to get more teachers into schools quickly), I would still have to take about a semester's worth of classes through an Education dept. somewhere before being eligible.

The goal initially is to get work to see me through until I can get into a PhD program (hopefully next year!), so I can't take the time yet to get licensed - money will run out long before then. But I really want to do something education/teaching related in the meantime. I hate the idea of having to go back to being an admin or working a low-paying job again, but it seems a masters in History doesn't open up a ton of doors. Go figure. I am beginning to think, however, that if I don't get into a PhD program next year, I'll go back to get some education classes and hopefully get licensed and maybe teach high school, rather than college. We'll just have to see I guess.
